The NTS DreamWriter 200 is a portable word-processor introduced around 1996, primarily aimed at schools and educational institutions. It uses the same casing and LCD design as the Amstrad NC200 but was built with a different internal architecture.
Instead of the NC200’s Z80 processor, the DreamWriter 200 uses an NEC V20 CPU (an enhanced 8088 equivalent) and includes a built-in 1.44 MB floppy disk drive—an upgrade over the NC200’s 720 KB drive. It runs a word-processing interface and organizer apps like calculator, diary, address book, scheduler, world-time clock, file transfer, and includes modem support for email connections.
Although the case looks nearly identical to the Amstrad units (black NC models), the DreamWriter 200 typically appears in off-white with blue and green stripes. Its Excel-like features—including file transfer to PCs, Macs, or Acorn computers—and educational focus set it apart from the home-use NC200.
In summary, the NTS DreamWriter 200 is a school-focused variant of the NC200 form factor, but with a completely different CPU architecture, educational software suite, and enhanced floppy disk capabilities. |
