The Atari 260ST was the entry-level model in Atari’s 16/32-bit ST computer series, introduced around 1985. It was functionally identical to the 520ST, with the main difference being that it included only 256 KB of RAM. This made it more affordable, but limited its ability to run more demanding software and multitask effectively under GEM (Graphics Environment Manager). Some early versions of the 260ST were reportedly sold as 520ST units after memory upgrades.
The 260ST used the Motorola 68000 CPU at 8 MHz and featured the same design as the 520ST, with a built-in keyboard and mouse ports on the side. Like other early ST models, it lacked a built-in floppy drive and required an external unit. Video output supported both RGB and composite monitors depending on the configuration.
Due to its limited memory and the falling prices of RAM, the 260ST had a short commercial lifespan and was quickly superseded by the 520ST and later models. |
