Atari 520ST

The Atari 520ST was the first widely available model in the ST series, introduced in 1985. It featured 512 KB of RAM and a Motorola 68000 CPU running at 8 MHz. It came without a built-in floppy disk drive or RF modulator, requiring external peripherals such as the Atari SF354 disk drive and a dedicated monitor or RF modulator for TV output.

The system ran TOS (The Operating System) with the GEM graphical user interface, stored in ROM. It supported three display modes: 320×200 in 16 colors, 640×200 in 4 colors, and 640×400 in monochrome. The computer was housed in a compact, all-in-one plastic case with an integrated keyboard.

One of the standout features of the 520ST was its inclusion of MIDI ports, which made it especially popular in music production environments. It offered a good balance of performance and affordability and helped establish Atari’s presence in the 16-bit home computer market.
