The Atari 520STFM was an enhanced version of the original 520ST, released in the mid-1980s. It featured 512 KB of RAM, a built-in double-sided 3.5″ floppy disk drive, and a built-in RF modulator—hence the “FM” in the name. This allowed it to be connected directly to a TV without a dedicated monitor.
Like other ST models, it used the Motorola 68000 CPU running at 8 MHz and came with TOS (The Operating System) and GEM graphical user interface built into ROM. The 520STFM included the same graphical capabilities as the earlier ST machines: color resolutions of up to 640×200 (4 colors) or 320×200 (16 colors), and a 640×400 monochrome mode with a compatible monitor.
The inclusion of the floppy drive and TV output made the 520STFM more self-contained and user-friendly, contributing to its popularity in the late 1980s among home users and musicians, thanks to the built-in MIDI ports. |
