Atari MegaST2

Released in 1987, the Mega ST series (ST 2 with 2 MB RAM, ST 4 with 4 MB) was a “professional” evolution of the Atari 520/1040ST line. Both models were powered by an 8 MHz Motorola 68000 CPU, included a built-in 720 KB floppy disk drive, and featured a battery-backed real-time clock and a Blitter graphics co-processor—enhancements aimed at improving performance and graphic handling.

These systems were intended for desktop publishing and small business use, supporting both color and high-resolution monochrome monitors through separate video outputs. They used a two-piece “pizza box” style desktop case with a separate full-size keyboard, known for offering better typing feel than earlier ST models.

The Mega ST 2 and ST 4 offered expansion via an internal MegaBUS slot and were often used with external hard drives (like the MegaFile 20/30) and Atari’s laser printer—marketed under the slogan “Power Without the Price.” They came with the TOS operating system and GEM graphical interface and were fully compatible with earlier ST software, with only rare issues related to hardware-specific or copy-protected titles.
