NEC PC-8001mkII

The NEC PC-8001 mkII was released in March 1983 as an enhanced version of the popular PC-8001. It introduced improved graphics capabilities with new modes, including 320×200 in color and 640×200 in monochrome. The system came with 64 KB of RAM and a revised 32 KB ROM containing N80-BASIC.

Unlike its predecessor, the mkII included a built-in interface for 5.25″ floppy drives and featured two internal expansion slots, eliminating the need for an external expansion chassis. It remained fully compatible with software written for the original PC-8001.

An optional PCG-8100 module could be added for more advanced character-based graphics. Available ports included composite and RGB video output, cassette interface, serial port, printer interface, and floppy drive support.

Although its graphical power did not match that of the PC-8801 series, the mkII was a capable development system and a strong entry-level computer. A later revision, the mkIISR, appeared in 1985 with further enhancements, continuing the same design lineage
