Philips VG8230

The Philips VG8230 is an MSX2 home computer released in 1986, primarily targeted at the European market. It was part of Philips’ broader MSX line, which included several models based on both MSX1 and MSX2 standards. The VG8230 represented the company’s first foray into the MSX2 generation and was positioned as a semi-professional machine.

One of the most distinctive features of the VG8230 is its built-in 3.5″ single-sided floppy disk drive, which offered more convenient data storage compared to cassette-based systems. This made it especially suitable for business users, developers, and more advanced hobbyists. The keyboard is full-size with a separate numeric keypad, and the overall design is sober and functional, aimed at practical use rather than gaming.

Internally, the VG8230 conforms to MSX2 standards, with expanded video capabilities, improved BASIC, and more memory compared to MSX1 models. It also includes a built-in RS-232C interface, allowing for connection to modems and serial devices—features that were rare in most MSX home systems of the time.

While not as widely adopted as other Philips models like the VG8020, the VG8230 marked a significant step in the evolution of MSX computers, bridging the gap between home and professional use.
