Bandai Swan Crystal

The SwanCrystal is the third and final handheld in Bandai’s WonderSwan line, released exclusively in Japan on July 12, 2002. It is built on the same core hardware as its predecessors—featuring a 3.072 MHz NEC V30 MZ CPU and 64 KB RAM—but replaces the passive FSTN screen with a sharper reflective TFT LCD, eliminating the previous models’ ghosting and contrast slider.

Compared to the WonderSwan Color, the SwanCrystal is slightly smaller, includes four volume levels instead of three, and moves the power switch to the front. It supports all WonderSwan and WonderSwan Color game cartridges and added a few designs specifically for its enhanced display.

Powered by a single AA battery, it offers around 15 hours of gameplay. Multiple colors were released, including Skeleton Blue, Skeleton Black, Blue Violet, and Wine Red. Despite receiving praise for its improved screen and compact design, it was launched too late to compete with Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance and was discontinued in 2003 when Bandai exited the video game market.
