The GameKing II is the second handheld console in the GameKing series developed by Hong Kong’s Timetop. Released in October 2004 (model GM‑219), it resembles the PlayStation Portable in design. It uses a cartridge-based system compatible with original GameKing I titles, featuring three built-in games and additional cartridge support.
Internally, it’s powered by a 65C02-family CPU running at around 6 MHz, coupled with 64 MB of SDRAM and a monochrome LCD screen with a low resolution of 48×32 pixels and four shades of gray. The standout feature is its backlit display, powered by a third AAA battery, though the screen includes a fixed background image that shows when the backlight is on—a design quirk that many users found distracting.
Audio performance is above average for its type, with an enhanced sound amplifier compared to the first model. Control-wise, it features a standard D‑pad, A/B buttons, and non-functional shoulder buttons.
Despite having a library of around 38 games (three built-in plus approximately 35 cartridges, including multi-carts), the system is known for primitive graphics, odd box art, and sluggish screen performance. Nonetheless, it gained a small cult following among collectors of quirky handheld systems. |
