The Intellivision Flashback is a plug-and-play console released in 2014 to bring back the Intellivision experience without requiring original hardware. It was designed to resemble a scaled-down version of the original console and includes reproductions of the iconic controllers, complete with working numeric keypads. Plastic overlays are provided for selected games to replicate the way the original Intellivision handled game-specific controls. The system comes with 60 built-in games, and some retail packages included a bonus 61st title.
Internally, the Flashback uses modern system-on-chip technology to emulate the original Intellivision hardware. While not identical to the original components, the emulation provides an accessible way to enjoy many classic games. The console connects directly to modern televisions through composite video output, and its plug-and-play nature allows quick setup and play without additional equipment.
The included controllers were designed to closely mirror the originals, featuring the circular directional disc and side-mounted action buttons. Although lightweight compared to the original units, they retain compatibility with the Flashback’s game library and allow the keypad to function as intended when combined with the overlays.
Limitations include the absence of a cartridge slot, meaning only the preloaded games can be played. Some well-known titles are missing due to licensing restrictions, and the emulation is not always a perfect reproduction, with small differences in sound and responsiveness compared to authentic Intellivision hardware. Despite this, the Flashback has been appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts for providing a nostalgic, cost-effective way to revisit the Intellivision library.
