SNK Neo Geo Pocket

The Neo Geo Pocket, released by SNK in 1998, was a monochrome handheld gaming console and the predecessor to the Neo Geo Pocket Color. It was designed to compete with other late-1990s handhelds by offering solid build quality and a focus on arcade-style games.

The device featured a monochrome LCD screen and utilized a 16-bit CPU, providing smooth gameplay for its time. It had a simple but ergonomic design with a digital D-pad and two main buttons. The Neo Geo Pocket supported link cable multiplayer and had a small but quality library of games, many based on SNK’s arcade titles.

Despite favorable critical reception, the Neo Geo Pocket faced tough competition from Nintendo’s Game Boy Color and struggled to gain significant market share outside Japan. It was discontinued in 1999 after SNK shifted focus to the color version of the console.
