| The PlayStation 3 Slim was a redesigned version of the original PS3, released by Sony in September 2009. Officially referred to simply as the “PlayStation 3” by Sony, the Slim model featured a significantly smaller, lighter, and more energy-efficient design while maintaining full compatibility with all PS3 games and services. The Slim model introduced a new 45nm Cell Broadband Engine processor, which reduced heat output and power consumption. It was approximately 33% smaller, 36% lighter, and consumed 34% less power than the original launch models. The exterior was also updated with a matte finish instead of the previous glossy casing, and the physical power and eject buttons were replaced with mechanical ones. Available in several storage configurations ranging from 120GB to 320GB, the PS3 Slim dropped support for PlayStation 2 backward compatibility entirely but retained full support for PlayStation 1 titles. It continued to support Blu-ray playback, Wi-Fi, HDMI output, and access to the PlayStation Network. The PS3 Slim was well received by both consumers and critics, helping revitalize the console’s sales and solidify the PS3’s position in the competitive seventh-generation console market. It played a crucial role in extending the life of the PlayStation 3 platform well into the following decade. |
