| The PlayStation 3 40GB model was released in late 2007 as a cost-reduced version of Sony’s original PlayStation 3 console. It was designed to offer a more affordable entry point into the PS3 ecosystem and replaced the earlier 20GB and 60GB launch models in many markets. This version featured a 40GB hard drive and retained key functionalities such as Blu-ray playback, HDMI output, Wi-Fi connectivity, and access to the PlayStation Network. However, several features were removed to reduce manufacturing costs. Most notably, it lacked hardware-based backward compatibility with PlayStation 2 games, eliminated the flash memory card readers, and included only two USB ports instead of four. The 40GB PS3 used a 65nm Cell processor, making it more energy-efficient and quieter than its predecessors. It came bundled with the Sixaxis controller and later with the DualShock 3. While criticized by some for its reduced feature set, the 40GB model played a significant role in expanding the console’s market reach due to its lower price point. |
