Sony PSOne

The PSone was a redesigned version of Sony’s original PlayStation console, released in 2000. It retained full compatibility with all PlayStation software and accessories but introduced a smaller, more compact form factor. The PSone was released toward the end of the PlayStation’s lifecycle and was marketed as a budget-friendly, portable alternative to the PlayStation 2, which had launched the same year.

Internally, the PSone was functionally identical to the original model, using the same 33.8688 MHz R3000A CPU and supporting all standard features such as memory cards and DualShock controllers. The primary difference lay in its exterior design: it was about one-third smaller and featured a curved, rounded aesthetic with a white casing. Sony also released an optional 5-inch LCD screen attachment, allowing the PSone to be used as a portable unit when paired with a car adapter or battery pack.

Despite the PlayStation 2’s presence on the market, the PSone sold extremely well—particularly among younger gamers and as a second console. By the end of its production, the PSone had helped push total PlayStation hardware sales past 100 million units, making it one of the best-selling home console platforms of its generation.
