Universum Color Multi Spiel 4014

The Universum Color Multi Spiel 4014 was a first-generation home video game console released in the late 1970s, primarily in West Germany. It was sold under the Universum brand, which was a private label of the German mail-order company Quelle. The console was part of the widespread wave of Pong-derived systems that used the General Instrument AY-3-8500 chipset, a popular solution for dedicated home gaming devices at the time.

The 4014 offered multiple built-in games, typically including Tennis, Football, Squash, and Practice modes. It featured color output, which was an enhancement over many earlier black-and-white systems. Players used hardwired paddle-style controllers with rotary dials. A switch-based interface allowed game selection, difficulty settings, and options such as manual or automatic serve.

Like many similar systems, the Universum Color Multi Spiel 4014 did not support external cartridges or software and relied entirely on the internal logic of the AY-3-8500 chip. Although functionally similar to dozens of other consoles of the era, it stands out to collectors for its distinctive 1970s European design and its association with Quelle’s consumer electronics catalogues.
