Agent X II: The Mad Prof’s Back

Genre: Multi-genre / Action
Publisher: Mastertronic
Year: 1987
System: Amstrad CPC

Agent X II: The Mad Prof’s Back is the sequel to the original Agent X, once again putting players in control of the titular secret agent on a mission to stop the nefarious Mad Professor. The game is divided into three distinct stages, each representing a different gameplay style: a horizontally scrolling shooter, a Breakout-style paddle game, and a platforming sequence. This variety aimed to offer a diverse gameplay experience, but also drew mixed reactions from critics and players.

Released as a budget title by Mastertronic, Agent X II was noted for its impressive presentation given the price point. Amstrad Action praised the colourful graphics and the music by Tim Follin, which pushed the limits of the CPC’s sound capabilities. However, the game’s fragmented structure and inconsistent quality between levels were common criticisms. While the shooter stage was generally well-received, the platform section was described as frustratingly difficult with unresponsive controls. Despite its flaws, the game holds nostalgic value for fans of quirky, ambitious 8-bit titles.
