Billy the Kid

Genre: Light Gun Shooter
Publisher: Virgin Mastertronic
Year: 1989
System: Amstrad CPC

Billy the Kid is a light gun shooter developed for multiple 8-bit platforms, including the Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, and Commodore 64. On the CPC, it is played using the Magnum Lightphaser. Set in a stylised Wild West, players step into the boots of the infamous outlaw, using quick reflexes to take down lawmen, bounty hunters, and rival gunslingers across a series of shooting-gallery-style levels.

The game featured large character sprites, themed backgrounds, and increasingly frantic enemy patterns. While reviewers like Amstrad Action found the light gun gameplay entertaining, especially as a novelty, the game was criticised for being short and lacking variety. Still, Billy the Kid remains one of the few titles that made full use of the Magnum Lightphaser and is remembered fondly by fans of niche peripherals.
