Fifth Quadrant

Genre: Strategy / Adventure
Publisher: Gargoyle Games
Year: 1988
System: Amstrad CPC

Fifth Quadrant is a futuristic strategy-adventure game from British developer Gargoyle Games, known for pushing technical boundaries on 8-bit systems. Set in a dystopian sci-fi world, the game casts the player as a lone soldier navigating a complex maze of corridors filled with traps, enemies, and environmental hazards. It combines real-time elements with puzzle-solving and shares a similar interface style to Gargoyle’s earlier title, Heavy on the Magick.

Upon release, Fifth Quadrant received mixed but intrigued reactions from the gaming press. Magazines such as Amstrad Action and CPC Power praised its moody atmosphere and impressive technical execution on the CPC. However, the controls were often described as clunky, and the difficulty curve steep. It was largely appreciated by players who enjoyed cerebral challenges and dark sci-fi themes.
