Mandragore

Genre: Role-playing / Adventure
Publisher: Infogrames
Year: 1984
System: Amstrad CPC

Mandragore is a French role-playing game set in a fantasy world where the player leads a party of four adventurers on a quest to defeat the evil sorcerer Yarod-Nor. The game features an open-ended structure, allowing players to explore nine different castles in any order, solve puzzles, and gather clues before facing the final challenge.

The gameplay is text-based with a simple command interface, where players navigate characters by entering directions and actions. Character attributes like strength, intelligence, and wisdom exist but do not have a direct impact on gameplay, placing the emphasis on exploration and problem-solving.

Mandragore is recognized as one of the earliest examples of French RPGs and served as a precursor to Infogrames’ later title Drakkhen. The game received the “Prix Arcade” award from the French Ministry of Culture in 1984.
