Manic Miner

Genre: Platform
Publisher: Software Projects
Year: 1984
System: Amstrad CPC

Manic Miner is a landmark platform game and one of the first to introduce precise level-based structure, timing-based hazards, and looping enemy patterns. The player controls Miner Willy, who must navigate through 20 deadly caverns filled with spikes, monsters, crumbling floors, and disappearing platforms. The objective in each level is to collect all items before oxygen runs out, then reach the exit to proceed.

Originally developed for the ZX Spectrum by Matthew Smith, the game was later ported to the Amstrad CPC by Software Projects in 1984. The CPC version preserves the structure and challenge of the original while adapting graphics and sound to the system’s capabilities. Its catchy background tunes and colourful visuals contributed to its status as a defining title of the early 8-bit era.

Manic Miner’s tight controls, unforgiving difficulty, and quirky humour made it a standout hit, and it continues to be remembered as one of the most influential platformers of its time.
