Shard of Inovar is a text-based adventure game with graphical icons, released by Bulldog Software in 1987. Set in a richly detailed fantasy world, players take on the role of Varwield Secunda, the apprentice chosen to perform the Rite of Decairn to restore the protective barrier (Cairnrue) against a devastating plague. The game begins as Varwield ventures into a lore-filled narrative involving ancient Elfin races, magical shards, and devious adversaries like Varwield Arthermin, whose betrayal trapped the protagonist’s mentor and threatens the world.

Instead of traditional typed commands, the game utilizes an icon-driven interface: players select actions such as “Go,” “Take,” “Use,” or “Invoke” from on-screen icons, then choose targets from text descriptions, making interaction smoother and more intuitive. Icon options also include context-sensitive verbs like “Give item to person.” Static graphic windows display locations and inventory, enhancing immersion. Puzzles revolve around rituals, spellcasting, item management, and exploration, demanding both narrative engagement and logic.
