The Real Ghostbusters is an action-oriented, top-down shoot-’em-up game based on the popular animated television series. Players take control of one of the Ghostbusters team members, such as Peter, Ray, or Egon, and are tasked with capturing various ghosts that have escaped into different locations. The gameplay involves shooting ghosts with proton blasters and then trapping them by sucking them into proton packs. Across 10 progressively challenging levels, players encounter a range of ghost types and obstacles that require quick reflexes and strategic use of limited resources.

Power-ups play a crucial role in the game, providing players with weapon upgrades, temporary shields, and even assistance from the friendly ghost Slimer, who can attack enemies on the player’s behalf. Each level culminates in a boss battle, testing the player’s skills and ability to manage both offensive and defensive tactics. The Amstrad CPC version supports two-player cooperative gameplay, allowing friends to team up in their ghost-hunting adventure.
