Xenon is a vertically scrolling shoot ’em up developed by The Bitmap Brothers, marking their debut title. Originally released in 1988, the game was made available for several home computer platforms, including the Amstrad CPC, where it retained the challenging gameplay and distinctive presentation that became a hallmark of the developer’s early work.
In Xenon, players control a high-tech vehicle that can transform between a ground-based tank and a flying jet. Each level requires switching between modes to tackle different enemy types and environmental obstacles. The tank can navigate through tight corridors and destroy ground defenses, while the jet is used to avoid terrain and engage airborne enemies.
The Amstrad CPC version offered detailed graphics for its time, with smooth scrolling and a moody color palette that complemented the game’s futuristic setting. Though technically less advanced than some other versions, it remained a faithful adaptation with the same core mechanics and level design.
Xenon gained attention for its gameplay depth and polished presentation, contributing to the early success of The Bitmap Brothers as a development studio.
