Year: 1983
System: Apple II

Defender is a side-scrolling shoot-’em-up originally developed by Williams for arcades and later ported to the Apple II by Atarisoft. The player controls a spaceship that patrols an alien planet, tasked with protecting stranded humans from being abducted by alien forces. The game scrolls horizontally in both directions and includes a radar scanner to track enemy positions.

Armed with a rapid blaster and a limited number of smart bombs, the player must destroy various alien enemies, such as Landers, Bombers, and Mutants, while rescuing the vulnerable humans on the ground. The gameplay is fast and relentless, requiring quick reflexes and constant awareness. While the Apple II version is graphically more basic than its arcade counterpart, it successfully preserves the game’s core mechanics and intense pace, offering a faithful experience on 8-bit hardware.
