Description:
Archon: The Light and the Dark is a strategy-action game developed by Free Fall Associates and released by Electronic Arts in November 1983 for the Atari 8-bit family. The game combines elements of chess with real-time combat. Players control one of two opposing sides—Light or Dark—each consisting of nine different pieces with unique abilities. The objective is to control five power points on the board or eliminate all opposing pieces.
The game board consists of a 9×9 grid, with alternating light and dark squares. When a piece lands on an opposing piece’s square, a real-time battle ensues, where players directly control the combatants. The outcome of these battles depends on the pieces’ abilities and the player’s skill.
Archon: The Light and the Dark was one of the first titles published by Electronic Arts and received critical acclaim for its innovative gameplay and engaging mechanics. This is the Atari XEGS version released in 1987.
