Encounter! is a first-person shoot ’em up video game released in 1983 for Atari 8-bit computers and Commodore 64. Designed and programmed by Paul Woakes, the game was initially published by Novagen Software in the UK and Europe, and by Synapse Software in North America. It was later re-released by Atlantis Software as a budget title for the Atari 8-bit and Commodore 64 platforms. Versions for the Amiga and Atari ST computers followed much later, in 1991.
In Encounter!, players control a probe vehicle navigating a series of levels filled with enemy saucers and homing missiles. The objective is to shoot down the required number of enemies on each level to proceed. Upon completion, players enter a “stargate” sequence where they must navigate through a hail of spheres at high speed, testing their reflexes and precision.
