Galactic Empire

Genre: Strategy
Publisher: A1 Software
Year: 1986
System: Atari 8-bit

Galactic Empire is an early space empire strategy game that laid groundwork for the later 4X genre. Developed by Doug Carlston and originally published by Adventure International, the game involves commanding the starship Galactica with the mission to conquer and control 20 planets in the central galactic system.

Each planet varies in technological level and population, affecting the difficulty of establishing air and ground control. The game operates in real-time, with one year equaling approximately four minutes, and players have 1000 years to complete their conquest.

Players manage orders such as sending scouting missions, managing production on conquered planets, and organizing fleet movements. The game features three types of ships: fighters to establish air superiority, transports to deploy troops, and scouts for gathering intelligence on unknown systems. Without faster-than-light travel, all movements require careful planning, and players can enter cryogenic sleep during long waits.

Galactic Empire offers a detailed command interface emphasizing strategy, resource management, and tactical planning within a sci-fi setting.
