Hardball

Genre: Sports / Baseball
Publisher: Atari
Year: 1987
System: Atari 8-bit

Hardball is a baseball simulation game developed by Accolade and published by Atari for the XE Game System (XEGS) in 1987. The game combines arcade-style gameplay with strategic managerial elements, offering players control over pitching, batting, fielding, and team management.

Gameplay is controlled via joystick or arrow keys and an action button. Pitch selection uses the four cardinal directions to choose pitch type and aim—low, high, inside (toward the batter), or outside (away from the batter). Batting uses the same directional controls to aim swings. When fielding after a hit, the defensive player closest to the ball flashes to indicate control, and players use the directions to throw the ball to any of the four bases.

Hardball features a pitcher’s perspective, similar to that used in Major League Baseball broadcasts. Managerial options allow selection of pitchers and rearranging team members, each with individual statistics that affect performance. This integration of management and arcade-style control distinguished Hardball from earlier baseball games that focused only on one aspect.
