Kaboom! is a fast-paced action game originally developed and released by Activision in 1981 for other platforms, with the Atari 8-bit computer version following in 1983. The game was designed by Larry Kaplan, one of Activision’s co-founders, and features a simple but intense gameplay loop focused on reflexes and coordination.
The player takes on the role of a bucket-wielding hero trying to catch bombs dropped by the “Mad Bomber,” a criminal racing across the top of the screen. The bombs fall in increasingly complex and rapid patterns, and the player must move three stacked buckets horizontally to catch them. Missing a bomb causes one bucket to be destroyed, and the game ends when all buckets are lost.
The Atari 8-bit version closely mirrors the original gameplay while offering smooth animation and precise controls. Like other versions, it features a progressively challenging difficulty curve, where each wave of bombs increases in speed and unpredictability.
