Ninja Master is an action game developed by Tron Software and published by Firebird Software in 1986 for the Atari 8-bit family of computers and other 8-bit home computers. The game was part of Firebird’s budget “Silver Range” series and was sold at a retail price of £1.99.
Players assume the role of a ninja trainee aiming to advance through a series of skill tests to earn higher belt ranks. The game features four distinct mini-games testing different ninja skills: arrow deflection, where the player must use punches or kicks to block arrows shot from various directions; board breaking, requiring rapid key presses to break a wooden board with a karate chop; shuriken interception, involving deflecting incoming shurikens with a sword; and blowgun targeting, where the player aims to hit canisters thrown horizontally across the screen. Each test has a qualifying score to progress, and players have three attempts per challenge. After completing all tests, players earn a belt and begin again at a higher difficulty level.
The Atari 8-bit version was released on cassette and is compatible with the Atari 400/800 series computers. It was programmed in machine language and features simple graphics and sound consistent with other budget titles from the era.
Ninja Master received mixed reviews; some appreciated its variety of challenges, while others criticized the repetitive gameplay and limited depth. Despite this, it remains part of the 1980s home computer gaming history.
