Popeye is a single-screen platform game developed by Western Technologies and licensed to Parker Brothers for the Atari 8‑bit family, released in 1983. The game is a home conversion of the 1982 Nintendo arcade original, which was based on the E. C. Segar comic strip.
Players control Popeye across fixed-screen stages in pursuit of floating items dropped by Olive Oyl—these include hearts, musical notes, and the letters spelling “HELP.” The goal is to collect all required tokens before they sink. Two main adversaries challenge Popeye: Brutus, who roams platforms and throws bottles, and the Sea Hag, who can instantaneously appear on any platform and audition obstacles. Collecting a can of spinach temporarily empowers Popeye to defeat Brutus and freeze falling tokens.
The game comprises three distinct stages: Sweethaven town, the docks, and a ship deck. Each stage features ladders, obstacles like barrels and seesaws, and unique challenges such as movable platforms and vigilant vultures. Controls are joystick-based and the game is programmed in machine language on a cartridge for the Atari 400/800/XL/XE systems.
