Qix is a puzzle game developed by Randy and Sandy Pfeiffer and published by Atari, Inc. for the Atari 8-bit family of computers in 1983. It is a port of the original 1981 arcade game by Taito.
The objective of Qix is to capture at least 75% of the playfield by drawing lines (called “Stix”) to enclose areas while avoiding the Qix, a line-based entity that moves unpredictably within the playfield. The player controls a marker that moves along the edges of the playfield and can draw lines into unclaimed territory. If the marker touches the Qix or an incomplete line, the player loses a life.
The Atari 8-bit version features simplified graphics and a limited color palette compared to the arcade original. The game includes both single-player and alternating two-player modes, with the second player taking turns after each game. The gameplay is paused momentarily after each area is captured to allow it to be filled in, which differs from the continuous action of the arcade version.
Qix received positive reviews for its unique gameplay and addictive nature. It was praised for its challenging mechanics and the strategic planning required to capture areas while avoiding the Qix.
