Space Invaders is a fixed shooter developed and published by Atari, Inc. for the Atari 8-bit family of computers in 1980. It is a licensed port of the original 1978 arcade game by Taito, which became a worldwide phenomenon and helped define the shooter genre.
The gameplay involves controlling a laser cannon positioned at the bottom of the screen, moving it horizontally to fire at rows of alien invaders that gradually descend. Defensive shields above the cannon provide temporary protection but are slowly destroyed by enemy fire and the player’s own shots. The goal is to eliminate all invaders before they reach the bottom of the screen. Occasionally, a “mystery ship” moves across the top of the screen, granting bonus points when hit.
The Atari 8-bit version includes both one- and two-player alternating modes and features joystick control. While it retains the core mechanics of the arcade original, some graphical and audio differences are present due to the limitations and characteristics of the Atari home system. The alien sprites differ from the arcade version, and sound effects such as the UFO noise may vary depending on the Atari model used.
