Raiden is an arcade-style vertically scrolling shooter originally developed by Seibu Kaihatsu, ported to the Atari Jaguar by Imagitec Design. In this version, players pilot the “Fighting Thunder,” a fighter ship tasked with defending Earth from an alien invasion by the Crystals. The game features classic shoot-’em-up mechanics such as enemy waves, boss battles, power-ups, and screen-clearing bombs.
Gameplay includes multiple stages of increasing difficulty. Players collect power-ups to upgrade weapons and use bombs to deal large area damage. There is a multiplayer mode in which two players can play cooperatively. The Jaguar port makes several adjustments from the arcade original, including modifications to graphics and effects, while attempting to retain the fast-paced action and challenge.
Visually, the Jaguar version presents detailed sprites and backgrounds that aim to replicate the arcade’s aesthetic, though performance and graphical fidelity were sometimes constrained by hardware. Audio includes music and sound effects intended to evoke the original arcade atmosphere, adapted for the Jaguar’s sound channels.
