Tempest 2000

Genre: Tube Shooter / Action
Developer: Jeff Minter / Llamasoft
Publisher: Atari Corporation
Year: 1994
Platform: Atari Jaguar

Tempest 2000 is a remake of the 1981 arcade game Tempest, developed by Jeff Minter and published by Atari Corporation for the Jaguar in 1994. It refreshed the original’s tube-shooter formula with modern enhancements and became one of the best-known titles for the system.

The gameplay features a “claw” ship that moves around the perimeter of a geometric web-shaped level, shooting enemy formations as they approach from the center. Players navigate increasingly complex webs, collect power-ups, and face diverse enemy types. The game adds bonus stages, special effects, and new visual styles that differentiate it from the original arcade version.

Visually, the title is noted for its colorful, psychedelic graphics, fast motion, and energetic techno soundtrack which enhance the intensity of the experience. Jeff Minter’s artistic vision blends neon lighting, particle effects, and rapid animations to create a vivid atmosphere. The game also includes multiplayer modes and secret options, including support for a “rotary” controller mode (even though such a controller was never officially released).
