Blue Lightning is an arcade-style flight combat game released as a launch title for the Atari Lynx handheld console. The player takes the role of an elite fighter pilot undertaking a series of missions across different environments, including arctic zones, deserts, and enemy bases. The game is known for its pseudo-3D perspective, attempting to simulate forward motion and depth within the technical constraints of the handheld system.
The gameplay involves piloting a jet across horizontally and vertically scrolling stages, shooting down enemy aircraft, tanks, and missile launchers while avoiding incoming fire. Each level has different objectives, ranging from destroying a set number of enemies to surviving waves of attacks. The player can choose between different missions from a briefing screen, and the game provides limited lives and continues.
Graphically, Blue Lightning showcased the Lynx’s advanced color display and sprite scaling capabilities for its time. The controls are responsive, with a button for firing and one for evasive maneuvers. The game also includes a password system that allows players to return to later stages.
Blue Lightning was released exclusively for the Atari Lynx and should not be confused with the similarly titled but significantly different version later released for the Atari Jaguar.
