Chip’s Challenge is a tile-based puzzle game originally developed by Epyx and included as a launch title for the Atari Lynx. The player controls Chip, a nerdy character navigating through a series of increasingly complex levels in order to join the Bit Busters computer club and impress his crush, Melinda the Mental Marvel.
Each level is presented as a grid-based map filled with obstacles, keys, doors, water, fire, ice, and enemy creatures. Players must collect a certain number of computer chips to unlock the exit, using logic and timing to solve environmental puzzles. Special items like flippers, fire boots, and suction cups allow Chip to bypass certain hazards.
The game features over 140 levels and a password system for progress tracking. Known for its cerebral gameplay and long-lasting appeal, Chip’s Challenge became one of the most celebrated puzzle games on the Lynx and was later ported to other platforms including MS-DOS and Windows.
