Gauntlet: The Third Encounter is a top-down dungeon crawler for the Atari Lynx and is a unique entry in the Gauntlet series. Unlike other ports or sequels, this version features new characters, levels, and gameplay elements not found in the arcade originals.
Players can choose from eight character classes, including traditional ones like the Valkyrie and Wizard, but also unconventional roles such as the Punk Rocker or Nerd. The goal is to fight through levels of enemies and traps, gather treasure, and reach the exit on each floor of a mysterious tower.
The game supports up to four players via the ComLynx cable and features large, scrolling maps, combat with ranged and melee attacks, and puzzle-solving elements. It blends arcade-style action with light RPG elements.
