Catch 23 is a first-person action-shooter released by Martech Games for the Atari ST (and other 8-bit systems) in 1987. The player infiltrates a highly secured enemy research island to steal prototype fighter blueprints and destroy a nuclear reactor.
Players begin by parachuting onto the island at night, equipped with an image-enhancing visor. Gameplay uses vector-style 3D graphics to navigate a sprawling island complex, which includes villages, military patrols, minefields, electric fences, and guard towers. Objectives include locating and rescuing scientists hidden in buildings via computer terminals, retrieving data on the CK23 aircraft, and planting a timed explosive in the reactor before sunrise.
Movement and combat occur in continuous 3D space. Players can traverse on foot and use shuttle transports between villages. Enemies range from armed guards to tanks, requiring stealth and precision shooting. Time is a critical factor: the mission must be completed before dawn or the player’s chance of success evaporates.
