System: Atari ST

Manhunter: New York is a post-apocalyptic adventure game where the player assumes the role of a Manhunter, a human working for an alien race called the Orbs. The game is set in a dystopian New York City in 2004, under the control of the Orbs who have enslaved humanity using implants and strict communication prohibitions. The player’s mission is to track down and eliminate members of a human resistance movement.

During the game, it is revealed that the Orbs are harvesting humans as a food source rather than being benevolent rulers. The gameplay involves exploration, puzzle-solving, and interacting with various characters to uncover the plot. The climax includes piloting an Orb spaceship to bomb Manhattan before the antagonist escapes.

Manhunter: New York was developed by Evryware and published by Sierra On-Line. It was the first Sierra game to utilize a point-and-click interface without a text parser, providing a more graphical and direct user experience. The game features dark and occasionally graphic visuals, using real New York locations for authenticity, which was a departure from Sierra’s typically family-friendly titles.

The game sold over 100,000 copies and was followed by a sequel, Manhunter 2: San Francisco, released the following year. It was available on multiple platforms including Atari ST, Amiga, Apple II, and DOS.
