Pole Position is a racing game released for the Atari VCS in 1983, based on the popular 1982 arcade title by Namco. The player first attempts a timed “qualifying lap” on the Fuji Speedway track; success in this round determines the starting position for the Grand Prix race that follows.
Gameplay involves steering a Formula One-style race car around the track while avoiding other vehicles and maintaining control on turns. The car can shift between a low gear and a high gear, offering increased speed but making handling more challenging. Players must complete each lap before a timer runs out to continue the race.
Due to hardware constraints, the Atari 2600 version simplifies the visuals and sound compared to the arcade original. Roadside objects and scenery are present but less detailed. Movement and animation are more basic, but the core sense of speed and racing challenge are preserved.
