Space Invaders is a home console port of the 1978 arcade game, released for the Atari VCS in 1980. Players control a laser cannon at the bottom of the screen, tasked with defending Earth from descending rows of alien invaders that move side to side and step down closer each time they reach a screen edge.

The player must shoot all the aliens before they land or before the aliens’ fire destroys the cannon. Periodically a flying saucer crosses the top of the screen, which can be destroyed for bonus points. The game includes three defensive bunkers between the cannon and the invaders that can absorb shots.

The VCS version includes many variations on gameplay: some modes feature moving bunkers, invisible invaders, zigzagging shots, alternative shield behavior, cooperative play, and different difficulty settings. These modes add replay value by changing challenge and strategy.

Because of hardware limitations, graphics and sound are simpler than the arcade version: there are fewer invaders per wave and fewer visual details. Yet the core mechanic, challenge curve, and addictive nature are preserved. Space Invaders was one of the first “killer apps” for a home console, helping drive sales and interest in the Atari VCS.
