Space War is an early space combat game released for the Atari VCS in 1978. It is based on the original Spacewar! mainframe game, adapted for home console play. The game provides both single-player and two-player modes with several gameplay variations.

Players pilot one of two spacecraft with rotational and thrust controls. Ships can fire missiles and must manage limited fuel and ammunition. In certain variants, players may also pass through screen edges, use hyperspace to evade, or deal with gravitational effects when a “sun” is present in the play field. In one mode, there are also modules or a “starbase” for resupply.

Another mode, known as “Space Shuttle,” focuses on docking maneuvers. Players match their ship’s speed and direction to dock with a moving module, requiring careful control and timing rather than combat. This mode can often be played by a single player depending on settings.

Game rounds end either when a player reaches ten points or after ten minutes have elapsed. The variations allow for toggling of options like gravity, screen wrapping, presence of obstacles, and other modifiers that change how the game plays. The controls require practice due to momentum and inertia mechanics; the ship continues moving until acted upon by thrust.
