Carnival is a fixed-position shooting gallery game developed by Sega and published by Coleco for the ColecoVision console in 1982. Based on Sega’s 1980 arcade title, the game challenges players to shoot various carnival-themed targets while managing limited ammunition. Targets include ducks, rabbits, and owls, as well as spinning bonus wheels and pipes that release more targets into play.
Gameplay takes place on a single screen where targets move horizontally across three rows. The player controls a gun that moves left and right along the bottom of the screen, firing upward at the moving targets. Hitting certain objects can provide extra points or additional bullets, while others release obstacles that may cost the player ammunition if not destroyed. The game ends when the player runs out of bullets or fails to clear the stage within the given constraints.
The ColecoVision version retains the core mechanics of the arcade original but adapts them to the console’s hardware, with simplified but colorful graphics and straightforward sound effects. It preserves the strategic element of conserving ammunition while prioritizing high-value targets, which was a key aspect of the original design.
