Congo Bongo

Genre: Platform / Isometric Action
Developer: Sega
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1984
Platform: ColecoVision

Congo Bongo is an isometric platform action game developed and published by Sega for the ColecoVision console in 1984. The game is a home adaptation of Sega’s 1983 arcade title and features four distinct stages in which the player pursues a mischievous monkey through jungle-themed environments. The objective is to reach the top of each level while avoiding environmental hazards and various animal enemies.

The gameplay is presented from an isometric perspective, giving a pseudo-3D appearance unusual for the time. Players navigate sloped terrain, leap across gaps, and dodge creatures such as charging rhinos, snakes, and monkeys. Each stage offers unique challenges, from climbing cliffs while evading boulders to crossing rivers via moving lily pads and hippos.

The ColecoVision version condenses elements of the arcade original due to hardware limitations, reducing the number of stages but preserving the core gameplay and visual style. The bright, colorful graphics and distinctive viewpoint made Congo Bongo stand out in the ColecoVision library, though the isometric controls could be challenging for some players.
