Year: 1982
Platform: ColecoVision

Cosmic Avenger is a side-scrolling shooter developed by Universal and published by Coleco for the ColecoVision console in 1982. Adapted from the 1981 arcade game, it is notable for being one of the earliest horizontally scrolling shooters available on home consoles. Players control a spaceship navigating through enemy-filled environments, battling various ground and air targets while avoiding hazards.

Gameplay features continuous scrolling from left to right, with enemies appearing both in the air and on the ground. The player can fire forward at aerial targets and drop bombs to destroy ground installations such as tanks and missile launchers. The stages include urban landscapes, open terrain, and underwater sections, each introducing new enemy patterns and challenges. The game continues until all player lives are lost, focusing on achieving the highest possible score.

The ColecoVision version preserves much of the arcade gameplay, with smooth scrolling, colorful graphics, and responsive controls for the era. While the visuals are simplified compared to the arcade version, it retains the core mechanics and variety in enemy encounters that defined the original.
