Donkey Kong is a platform game developed by Nintendo and published by Coleco for the ColecoVision console in 1982. Based on Nintendo’s 1981 arcade hit, the game tasks players with guiding the character Jumpman (later known as Mario) through a series of obstacle-filled stages to rescue a damsel named Pauline from the giant ape Donkey Kong. It was a landmark title in the early 1980s arcade scene and one of the most significant releases in ColecoVision’s launch lineup.
The ColecoVision version features three of the arcade game’s four original stages: the barrel stage, the cement factory stage, and the rivet stage. The fourth stage, the pie factory, is omitted due to hardware limitations. Gameplay revolves around climbing ladders, jumping over obstacles, and timing movements to avoid hazards such as barrels, fireballs, and moving platforms.
Graphically, the ColecoVision port was one of the most accurate home versions of Donkey Kong at the time, featuring large, colorful sprites and smooth animation that closely resembled the arcade original. The sound effects and music were also adapted to fit the console’s capabilities, capturing the essential feel of the original game despite some simplifications.
Although the omission of the fourth stage was noted by players, the ColecoVision version was widely praised in its era for its faithfulness to the arcade experience. It played a major role in boosting early sales of the ColecoVision console and is still remembered as one of its defining titles.
