Bomb Squad is a puzzle game developed and published by Mattel Electronics for the Intellivision in 1982. Players take on the role of a bomb disposal technician tasked with disarming a bomb planted by the terrorist Boris before it detonates. The game utilizes the Intellivoice voice synthesis module, providing spoken instructions and feedback during gameplay.
At the start of each game, players are presented with a malfunctioning code display. To reveal the code that will disarm the bomb, players must repair various circuits by selecting corresponding squares on the display. Each circuit can be fixed using tools such as wire cutters, pliers, and a soldering iron. The player’s partner, Frank, provides verbal guidance on which circuits to repair and in what order. Incorrect repairs can result in time penalties or cause the bomb to explode.
As the difficulty increases, players encounter more complex circuits, and some components may overheat, requiring the use of a fire extinguisher. Once enough circuits are repaired, the player can decipher the code and enter it into the computer to disarm the bomb. The game offers adjustable difficulty levels, affecting the number of digits in the code and the time available to disarm the bomb.
The game features simple graphics, with a top-down view of the bomb’s circuitry and tools. The Intellivoice module enhances the experience by providing spoken instructions and feedback, adding to the game’s tension and immersion.
