Year: 1987
Platform: Intellivision

Commando is a vertically scrolling run-and-gun shooter developed by Realtime Associates and released for the Intellivision by INTV Corporation in 1987. It is based on Capcom’s 1985 arcade game, licensed through Data East for home console adaptation. The player controls a lone soldier navigating hostile territory under a relentless barrage of enemies.

The core objective is to advance through rugged terrain—spanning deserts and jungles—eliminating waves of enemy soldiers using a machine gun and limited grenades. Grenades are essential for clearing clusters of adversaries and overcoming environmental obstacles, while precise shooting is required to survive increasingly aggressive enemy patterns.

The game offers both solo and cooperative two-player modes, allowing players to work together tactically. Each mission concludes with a base attack scenario that significantly ramps up difficulty, demanding both quick reaction and strategic positioning to proceed.

Visually, the Intellivision conversion captures the essence of the arcade original with recognizable enemy formations and thematic backdrops. One notable engineering decision involved animating bullets and explosions using background frame manipulation rather than moving objects, allowing smoother performance within the console’s hardware limits.
