Frog Bog is an arcade-style action game developed by APh Technological Consulting and published by Mattel Electronics for the Intellivision in 1982. Players control one of two frogs, each stationed on a lily pad in a bog, with the goal of consuming as many flies as possible within a three-minute time limit.
The playfield consists of two lily pads connected by a narrow gap. From these pads, frogs leap into the air to catch passing flies with their tongues. Players must time their jumps accurately to catch the insects overhead, while avoiding missteps that send the frog into the water, requiring it to swim back to its pad and costing valuable time.
Gameplay includes both daytime and nighttime modes. In daytime, flies are visible and easier to catch; in nighttime mode, only lightning bugs are present, making them harder to detect except when they blink. Players may compete against the computer-controlled frog or engage in direct competition with another player, with the winner being the one who eats more flies by the end of the time limit.
The controls allow for precise jumps and tongue activations, adding a layer of skill to what appears to be a simple action concept. The game’s design encourages both timing and risk-taking, as the penalty for falling into the water can quickly shift the outcome of a match.
